Navigating Burnout: A Personal Journey into Self-Care

Navigating Burnout: A Personal Journey into Self-Care

Now and then, I take on a contract for a little shake-up in my routine. Just this past December, I started a new contract, and before I knew it, I was tumbling back into unhealthy habits.

Overworking and neglecting my own needs, I was practically a living embodiment of a to-do list! It was as if all the wonderful habits I had cultivated were being left behind, causing me to lose touch with myself - and, let me tell you, that was a frightening realization.

This experience reminded me of my journey in 2020, when I hit burnout. I was working 50-60 hour weeks, and suddenly I could barely manage 10. My body and mind were shutting down. It was then that I realized I had lost sight of who I was beyond my work.

During my recovery, I started focusing on self-care - journaling, trying out new hobbies, meditating. Gradually, I began to feel more like myself. I loved the new habits I was developing and the fresh version of me that was emerging.

To prevent falling back into old patterns, I took an emergency mental health day last week, to practice my self-care rituals; journaling, meditation, breathwork, and even tarot card reading. It was the reset I needed.

I also took a moment to pause and reflect, using a wellness check-in worksheet inspired by the 7 Dimensions of Wellness. This little gem has been a revelation, gently guiding me to areas of my life that could use a little extra love and care. Feel free to grab your own copy of the tool here.

Work can consume us, causing us to lose ourselves in the process. That's why I'm encouraging you to set aside some time for self-care this week. Whether it's meditation, journaling, or simply taking a walk, make time for it. Trust me, your future self will thank you!
